Discover more about Ratargul Swam Forest Shaheber Bazar turn

Ratargul Swamp Forest is a mesmerizing freshwater wetland ecosystem located in Bangladesh's Sylhet district. Known locally as the 'Sundarbans of Sylhet' or the 'Amazon of Bangladesh' , this unique forest covers 3,325 acres, including a 504-acre wildlife sanctuary. What sets Ratargul apart is its seasonal flooding, which occurs annually from May to October. During this monsoon season, the forest becomes submerged under 10 to 20 feet of water, creating a stunning landscape where trees appear to rise directly from the water. The forest is primarily composed of 'Koroch' and 'Hijal' trees, which are well-adapted to the wet conditions. Visitors explore the flooded forest by boat, navigating through narrow waterways and enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. Ratargul is home to a variety of wildlife, including snakes, monkeys, lizards, and diverse bird species, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Ratargul's history as a tourist destination began in the early 2000s, with tourism flourishing after its declaration as a wildlife sanctuary in 2015. The Forest Department manages the area to preserve its delicate ecosystem. The name 'Ratargul' comes from the Sylheti word 'Ratagacha,' referring to the 'Murta' or 'Pati' trees. Besides its natural beauty, Ratargul plays a vital role in flood management, absorbing large amounts of water during the monsoon season and helping to prevent flooding in nearby areas.
