Garrison Savannah: A Historic Racetrack

The Garrison Savannah is more than just a racetrack; it's a living testament to Barbados' rich history and vibrant culture. Established in 1845, this iconic venue has been a focal point of Barbadian life, evolving from a British military parade ground to a thriving center for horse racing and social gatherings. Originally, the Garrison Savannah served as a parade ground for the British Regiment stationed in Barbados. Officers would compete in horse races against wealthy plantation owners, marking the beginning of the island's horse racing tradition. In 1905, the Barbados Turf Club was established to manage and promote horse racing events, solidifying the Garrison Savannah's role as the heart of the sport in Barbados. The Garrison Savannah hosts three main horse racing seasons throughout the year, with approximately 25 race meetings and 185 races. The Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, a premier thoroughbred racing championship event, is the highlight of the racing season, attracting international participants and spectators. Beyond horse racing, the Garrison Savannah is a hub of community activity. The national Independence Day Parade takes place here every November 30th. Every Easter, the Savannah hosts a kite flying competition. On any given day, you'll find locals exercising, playing sports, or simply enjoying the open space. The Garrison Savannah is surrounded by significant historical buildings, including the Main Guard House and Clock Tower, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, St Ann's Fort, and the George Washington House. In 2016, a National Monument commemorating Barbados' 50th anniversary of independence was erected on the inner field. The Garrison Savannah is wheelchair accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.
