The original Handelsbeurs was destroyed by fire twice, once in 1583 and again in 1858, but was rebuilt each time. The current building, a neo-Gothic masterpiece designed by architect Jos Schadde, was inaugurated in 1872.For decades, the Handelsbeurs served as a vital meeting place for traders. In 1997, the stock exchange moved to Brussels, and the building stood empty for many years, falling into disrepair. However, after extensive renovations, the Handelsbeurs has been restored to its former glory and now operates as an event venue.Visitors can admire the building's architecture, characterized by its grand facade and intricate details. The interior features a large, open multifunction space with two galleries. While some original features, like the wooden floor and ceiling coats of arms, are missing, the building retains its historical charm. The Handelsbeurs is open to the public on weekends and holidays, offering a glimpse into Antwerp's rich trading history. It is located in the city center, close to the Meir shopping street and other attractions.
