Smedenpoort: A Medieval Gateway to Bruges

The Smedenpoort, or Blacksmith's Gate, is one of Bruges' four remaining medieval city gates. Dating back to 1297, it was rebuilt in 1367 and has been modified over the centuries. A bronze skull commemorates a foiled betrayal in 1691.

From the Markt, head west on Breidelstraat, which becomes Steenstraat. Continue onto Smedenstraat. Smedenpoort is located at the end of Smedenstraat on the right. The walk is approximately 15 minutes. No costs are involved.

From Bruges train station, take bus line 1 or 6 towards 'Zand'. Exit at the 'Smedenstraat' stop. Smedenpoort is a short walk from the bus stop. A single trip costs €3.00 if purchased in advance or €3.50 if purchased on the bus.
