Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, head towards the Phobjikha Valley. From the nearest major town, Wangdue Phodrang, take the road leading to the valley. The distance is approximately 60 kilometers and will take about 2 hours. Follow the signs to Phobjikha Valley. As you approach, you'll see the beautiful landscape unfold, with the monastery situated on a hill overlooking the valley. Once you reach the valley, look for the signs directing you to Gangtey Monastery (F5M7+WV9). The last stretch is a short uphill drive that leads directly to the monastery parking area.

  • Public Transportation

    For those using public transportation, take a bus from Thimphu or Paro to Wangdue Phodrang. Buses run regularly, and the fare is around 300-500 Ngultrum. Once in Wangdue Phodrang, you can hire a taxi or find a shared jeep to Phobjikha Valley for approximately 1000-1500 Ngultrum. The taxi or jeep ride will take about 2 hours. Inform the driver that you want to go to Gangtey Monastery, and they will take you directly to the entrance of the monastery.

  • Walk

    If you are already in Phobjikha Valley and prefer to walk, the monastery is approximately a 30-minute hike from the nearest village. Start from the village of Gangtey and follow the main path leading uphill towards the monastery. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the path can be steep in sections.
