Discover more about Bistrik tower

High atop Mount Trebević, overlooking Sarajevo, stands Bistrik Tower, a silent witness to the city's turbulent past. Constructed between 1890 and 1910 by Austro-Hungarian authorities as a military fortress, it formed part of a network of fortifications designed to secure their hold on the city. Its strategic location provided commanding views of the Sarajevo valley, making it an ideal observation post. Following World War II, the tower transitioned from military use to scientific exploration. In 1967, it was repurposed as an astronomical observatory by the University Astronomical Society in Sarajevo, known as the Orion Astronomical Society. This marked a new chapter in the tower's history, with the installation of three domes and the creation of the Sarajevo Sky Atlas. The observatory gained international recognition as a symbol of Sarajevo's scientific ambitions. Tragically, the Bosnian War in the 1990s brought an end to the observatory's scientific endeavors. The tower and its equipment were destroyed during the siege of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1995. Today, Bistrik Tower remains an abandoned ruin, a poignant reminder of the city's resilience and the ravages of war. Despite its deteriorated condition, the tower continues to hold cultural significance for the people of Sarajevo, who view it as a symbol of their heritage. Urban explorers are drawn to the site, intrigued by its history, panoramic views, and the street art that now adorns its walls.
