Discover more about Trebević

Trebević Mountain, standing at 1,629 meters, is the closest mountain to Sarajevo, making it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. Known as the "lungs of Sarajevo" due to its lush forests, it offers a refreshing escape from the city. Historically, Trebević has been significant since Illyrian times, with evidence of ancient settlements on its slopes. During the Austro-Hungarian era, its strategic importance grew, leading to the construction of fortifications. The mountain's role as a recreational area blossomed in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, with the establishment of mountaineering societies and lodges. The mountain played a key role in the 1984 Winter Olympics, hosting bobsled and luge events. However, the Bosnian War in the 1990s brought devastation, destroying much of the infrastructure, including the cable car. The bobsled track became a front line, and the area was heavily mined. In recent years, Trebević has experienced a resurgence. The cable car was rebuilt and reopened in 2018, providing easy access from the Old Town. Visitors can explore the remnants of the Olympic bobsled track, hike or bike along numerous trails, and enjoy panoramic views of Sarajevo and the surrounding mountains. Other attractions include the Sunnyland amusement park, Hotel Pino Nature, and the Via Ferrata Bijela Stijena for rock climbing. Trebević offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities, making it a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Sarajevo.
