Discover more about Hastahana Tuzla

Hastahana Tuzla, also known as Hadžiefendi's hastahana, holds the distinction of being the first public hospital in Tuzla. Established in 1874, near the end of Ottoman administration, through the initiative of Dr. Mehmed Šerbić, the first educated Muslim doctor from Bosnia and Herzegovina, who was sent to study in Constantinople. The hospital initially featured four rooms with ten beds for patients, along with an office, reception clinic, kitchen, and paramedic quarters. Serving the community until 1886 when a more modern hospital was constructed, Hastahana played a crucial role in providing healthcare to all citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic background. This commitment to inclusivity marked a significant advancement in healthcare accessibility within Tuzla. Declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2014, Hastahana stands as a symbol of Tuzla's medical and cultural heritage. A commemorative plaque was placed on the building to honor its centenary. Though reportedly devastated, the building serves as a reminder of Tuzla's past.
