Discover more about Mosque of Atik Behrem Bey

The Mosque of Atik Behrem Bey, often called Šarena džamija (Colourful Mosque), holds the distinction of being the oldest mosque in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its history stretches back to the 16th century, with mentions dating to 1548, suggesting construction around 1533. The name 'Atik' signifies its antiquity. The mosque is also associated with Behram Bey, possibly due to his medresa (school) being located nearby and his waqf (endowment) contributing to its maintenance. Originally built with clay and a wooden cupola, the mosque faced destruction in an 1871 fire. It was rebuilt in 1888 with a more robust dome, later replaced by a tile roof. The architecture features a 10x10m structure that dominates its surroundings from a small hill. Ten iron-barred windows adorn the ground floor. Inside, the minbar (pulpit) reflects an Arabic style. The minaret has a square base that transitions into a narrow, three-sided roof. Today, the Mosque of Atik Behrem Bey stands as a cultural landmark, reflecting Tuzla's Islamic heritage and offering a tranquil space for contemplation. Recent renovations, supported by Turkey, have restored its former glory.
