Perched atop Mlađevac hill, the Zvornik Fortress offers panoramic views of the Drina River and the surrounding landscape. This strategic location has been the site of fortifications since the late 13th century, with the fortress itself taking shape in the early 14th century. Throughout its history, the fortress has been controlled by Bosnian, Hungarian, Serbian, and Ottoman powers, each leaving their mark on its structure and character. The fortress is divided into three interconnected sections: Lower Town, Middle Town, and Upper Town. The Lower Town features the recognizable Town Gate, while the Middle Town contains the oldest parts of the fortress, including a 20-meter-high Large Tower. The Upper Town, situated on the highest point, offers the most expansive views. Legends attribute the construction of the fortress to Jerina, the wife of Despot Đurađ Branković, giving rise to its alternate name, Jerina's Town. Over the centuries, the fortress has been expanded and modified by various rulers, including the Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians. Today, the Zvornik Fortress stands as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a testament to the region's rich and complex past. Visitors can explore the fortress via a walking path from the town center or by car via an asphalt road.
