The Parque Nacional Cavernas do Peruaçu, established in 1999, protects 56,448 hectares of geological and archaeological wonders in northern Minas Gerais. The park is located in the municipalities of Januária, Itacarambi, and São João das Missões. Here, the Peruaçu River has carved a dramatic canyon through a limestone massif, creating a landscape of towering cliffs, natural bridges, and extensive cave systems.The park's caves are adorned with prehistoric rock paintings, offering a glimpse into the lives of ancient civilizations. The Lapa dos Desenhos boasts over 3,000 paintings, some reaching 15 meters in height. The park is home to over 80 archaeological sites. The Lapa do Boquete contains a prehistoric silo and human remains dating back 7,000 years.The Gruta do Janelão, the park's main attraction, features the Perna da Bailarina, believed to be the largest free-hanging stalactite in the world, measuring 28 meters. The cave's natural skylights illuminate the stunning formations within.The park lies in a transition zone between the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, resulting in diverse flora and fauna.     Driving

The park's headquarters are located off the BR-135, at km 155, in the community of Fabião I. Parking is available near the park's attractions.     Public Transport

    From Montes Claros, take a bus to Januária or Itacarambi. Transnorte operates buses from Montes Claros to Fabião. Bus fares from Montes Claros to Januária range from R$75 to R$110. A taxi from Januária to the park may cost around R$50-R$80.
