Fundação Projeto TAMAR Florianópolis: A Sea Turtle Sanctuary

Fundação Projeto TAMAR in Florianópolis is a vital conservation and education center focused on protecting sea turtles. Established in 2005, the center supports conservation efforts in southern Brazil, a key feeding area for these marine creatures. The foundation plays a significant role in raising awareness about marine biodiversity and the threats turtles face.Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the life cycle, habitats, and conservation of sea turtles. The center features tanks housing four of the five sea turtle species found in Brazil, including green turtles, loggerheads, olive ridleys, and hawksbills. In addition to the turtles, there is also a pool and aquarium with other marine animals from the region. The on-site museum displays the project's history and conservation efforts. Interactive spaces like the Research Area and Threats Area offer insights into field work and conservation strategies.Projeto Tamar also focuses on mitigating the impact of fishing on sea turtles and engages in environmental education. The center is designed to be accessible, with facilities for wheelchair users and covered areas for rainy days. Each year, the center welcomes around 200,000 visitors, including school groups and tourists.
