Naufragados Beach: History and Untouched Beauty

Naufragados Beach, or 'Beach of the Shipwrecked,' is a captivating destination on the southern coast of Florianópolis, Brazil. Its name is derived from a tragic event in 1753 when two ships carrying Azorean immigrants wrecked near the shore, with only 77 of the 250 passengers surviving. This history lends an aura of mystery to the beach, contrasting with its stunning natural landscape.The beach is part of the Tabuleiro State Park preservation area, ensuring its natural beauty remains largely untouched. The absence of roads contributes to its secluded atmosphere; access is only possible via a 3-kilometer hiking trail from Caieira da Barra do Sul or by boat. The trail itself is an attraction, offering views of waterfalls and the ruins of colonial buildings.At one end of the beach stands a historic lighthouse, constructed in 1860, one of the oldest in Santa Catarina. A climb to the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline and the nearby Araçatuba Island, where the Fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Araçatuba is located. Remnants of cannons installed during the Second World War can also be found, a reminder of the area's strategic importance throughout history.Naufragados Beach provides a tranquil escape with its white sand and clear waters. A small river flows into the ocean on one side, adding to the picturesque scenery. While the waves can be rough at times, the beach is suitable for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. A few local bars and restaurants offer refreshments and typical fisherman dishes. Camping is permitted, though facilities are limited.
