Discover more about Praça do Ferreira - Centro

Praça do Ferreira, often called the "Coração da Cidade" (Heart of the City), is a vibrant and historically significant plaza in the center of Fortaleza. Since 2001, it has been officially declared a Historical and Heritage Landmark of Fortaleza. In 1839, the area was just a sandy field with a large well. In 1871, Ferreira, a local pharmacist and president of the Municipal Chamber, renovated and urbanized the space, leading to the plaza being named in his honor. By 1886, the first café-kiosk, Café Java, was established, becoming a popular meeting spot. In 1902, the mayor Guilherme Rocha closed the central well and created a garden called "Jardim 7 de Setembro". Throughout the 20th century, Praça do Ferreira underwent several transformations. In 1920, Mayor Godofredo Maciel removed the kiosks and added gardens and an open-air bandstand. In 1933, the iconic clock tower, known as the Coluna da Hora (Hour Column), was built in Art Deco style. However, it was demolished in 1967 and reconstructed in 1991 with a different design. Today, Praça do Ferreira remains a bustling hub surrounded by historical buildings like Palacete Ceará and Cine São Luiz. It is a place where locals and tourists converge, with street vendors, artisans, and performers adding to its lively atmosphere.
