Parque das Ruínas, or Ruins Park, is a captivating public park and cultural center nestled in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. The park's name comes from the ruins of what was once the Palacete Murtinho Nobre, a mansion built between 1898 and 1902. The mansion was home to Laurinda Santos Lobo, a prominent socialite and patron of the arts during Rio's Belle Époque. Known as the “marechala da elegância” (marshal of elegance), Laurinda hosted intellectuals and artists, making her home a hub for modernism in the 1920s. Figures like Villa-Lobos, Tarsila do Amaral, and Isadora Duncan frequented her parties.After Laurinda's death in 1946, the mansion was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In the 1990s, the state government purchased the site and held an architectural contest to transform the ruins into a cultural center. The winning design by Ernani Freire integrated the original brick walls with modern glass and steel structures. Opened in 1997, the Parque das Ruínas now features exhibition spaces, an auditorium, a stage, and a café.Visitors can explore the ruins, wander through the gardens, and enjoy panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro.
