Discover more about Catedral da Sé (Igreja Matriz de São Salvador do Mundo)

Catedral da Sé, formally Igreja Matriz de São Salvador do Mundo (Church of the Holy Savior of the World), is a significant landmark in Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil. Founded in 1540, it is the oldest religious temple in Olinda, marking the Portuguese presence in northeastern Brazil. The cathedral has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting different architectural styles, with a strong influence of Italian Mannerism. Originally built using the taipa technique (a mixture of mud, straw, and stakes), the church was simple in design, typical of Portuguese colonial churches of the time. By 1584, it had grown to include three naves and side chapels. The church suffered significant damage during the Dutch invasion in 1631 when it was set ablaze. Following the Portuguese reconquest, the church was reconstructed, incorporating artistic and architectural elements lost in the fire. Between 1974 and 1976, a comprehensive restoration project aimed to restore its original features from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Today, the Catedral da Sé offers visitors a glimpse into Brazil's colonial past. Inside, the main chapel features an episcopal throne and jacaranda chairs, along with the tombs of notable bishops. The cathedral's terrace provides enchanting views of Olinda and Recife. The surrounding area is filled with colorful colonial houses, artisan shops and lively cafes.
