Praça Sérgio Loreto: A Historical Plaza in Recife

Praça Sérgio Loreto, situated in the heart of Recife's São José neighborhood, holds a rich history and continues to be a landmark in the city. Originally, the area was a fish nursery, called Viveiro do Muniz, in the late 1700s. This nursery was created during excavations to obtain sand for landfilling near the Forte das Cinco Pontas, aimed at preventing flooding caused by tidal variations.In 1924, the plaza was designed with English landscaping characteristics, featuring curved lines, winding paths, and shady trees. It was inaugurated in 1926 and named in honor of the then-governor of Pernambuco, Sérgio Loreto, who was recognized for his advancements in sanitation and public health. For a time, it was considered the most beautiful garden in Recife, boasting a bandstand and the Ilha dos Amores. Over the years, the plaza was also known as Praça do Muniz, Campina do Bodé, and Praça Siqueira Campos.Over time, Praça Sérgio Loreto faced deterioration, exacerbated by the construction of the Avenida Dantas Barreto, which significantly altered its original design. Despite these challenges, the plaza remains a significant location, especially during Carnival, serving as a central gathering point for the Galo da Madrugada bloco. The Galo da Madrugada, one of the largest Carnival blocks in the world, maintains the plaza, ensuring its upkeep. The plaza features a monument honoring the heroes of the Pernambucan Restoration, created by sculptor Abelardo da Hora. Today, the plaza is known for its trees and is suitable for walking.
