This 405,000 square meter estate served as Burle Marx's home and experimental landscape laboratory from 1949 until his death in 1994. Originally known as Fazenda or Engenho da Bica, the property's history dates back to 1681. Burle Marx and his brother purchased the land in 1949, seeking a space with diverse soils, exposed rocks, and abundant water. Over the years, they transformed it into a landscape showcasing a fusion of Modernist art and native tropical flora. In 1985, Burle Marx donated the site to the Brazilian government to ensure its preservation and the continuation of research. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in July 2021. The Sítio is home to over 3,500 species of tropical and subtropical plants, harmoniously arranged in gardens and nurseries alongside the native vegetation of mangroves, restinga, and Atlantic Forest. Visitors can explore the gardens, the house, and the workspaces, gaining insight into Burle Marx's design process and his integration of gardens into social and urban life. The house also features Burle Marx's collection of folk art.
