Discover more about Sítio Roberto Burle Marx - IPHAN

Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, located in Barra de Guaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, is more than just a garden; it's a living testament to the genius of Roberto Burle Marx, a landscape architect who revolutionized garden design. Purchased in 1949 by Roberto and his brother, the site served as both a home and an experimental laboratory where Burle Marx could cultivate his unique vision. Over the decades, Burle Marx transformed the former 'Fazenda da Bica' into a sprawling 405,000 square meter estate, showcasing a harmonious blend of native vegetation, including mangroves, restinga, and Atlantic Forest, with meticulously designed gardens. The Sítio is home to over 3,500 species of tropical and subtropical plants, many of which are rare or endangered, collected from across Brazil and the world. Visitors can explore the gardens, the house, and the workspaces, discovering Burle Marx's unique architecture, art collections, and personal objects. The main house now serves as a museum, displaying over 3,000 items, including Burle Marx's art and craftwork. The Sítio reflects Burle Marx's innovative approach to landscape design, characterized by sinuous forms, mass planting, architectural arrangements of plants, and the use of tropical flora. In 1985, Burle Marx donated the Sítio to the Brazilian government to ensure the continuity of research and the preservation of his legacy. Today, managed by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN), the Sítio is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its cultural and environmental significance. Visits are by guided tour only and require prior booking. Comfortable shoes and insect repellent are recommended.
