Aldeia Hippie: A Bohemian Coastal Enclave

Discover Bahia's bohemian soul in Aldeia Hippie, a coastal village where art, nature, and a free-spirited vibe blend seamlessly.

4.7

Nestled in Arembepe, Camaçari, the Aldeia Hippie offers a glimpse into an alternative lifestyle rooted in the counterculture movement. Founded in the late 1960s, this coastal village became a haven for hippies seeking refuge and artistic inspiration. The village gained international recognition, drawing in famous figures such as Janis Joplin and Mick Jagger, who embraced its free-spirited atmosphere. The Aldeia Hippie features unique, rustic architecture with huts constructed from stone and taipa (mud and wattle), blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape. The community is bordered by the Capivara River lagoon and natural pools formed by coastal reefs. Approximately 80 residents currently inhabit the village, sustaining themselves through the creation and sale of handcrafted goods. Visitors can explore the village, purchase local crafts, and experience the unique energy of this artistic community. The village provides camping spaces, a restaurant, and a craft fair. While some original straw and wood houses have been replaced with sturdier structures, the village retains its original charm and unconcerned with modern comforts. The Aldeia Hippie hosts festivals and celebrations, such as the Festival da Primeira Lua Cheia (First Full Moon Festival), with music and bonfires. The nearby Projeto Tamar, a sea turtle conservation project, also provides an opportunity to learn about local wildlife and conservation efforts.
