Discover more about Reconcavo Wanderley Pinho Museum

Located in the district of Caboto, in Candeias, Bahia, the Museu do Recôncavo Wanderley Pinho is a window into Brazil's colonial past and the sugar industry that shaped the region. The museum is set in a magnificent manor house, constructed from 1760 onwards, formerly the heart of the Engenho Freguesia. The house itself is a historical artifact, featuring 55 rooms, four floors, and a chapel. The architecture, developed around two internal courtyards, is considered one of the few examples in the Recôncavo Baiano to have preserved its original features. Inside, the museum displays a collection of over 200 pieces dating back to the 17th century, including clothing, ornaments, paintings, ceramics, decorative objects, and furniture. These items offer insights into the lives of the families who lived on the estate and the enslaved people who worked there. The history of the manor house began in the 17th century. By 1850, the plantation employed around 160 enslaved people. The plantation ceased grinding sugarcane in 1900. José Wanderley de Araújo Pinho (1890-1967), who championed the preservation of Brazil's historical and artistic heritage, envisioned the museum, which opened in 1971. Today, the museum is a nationally recognized heritage site, protected since 1944.
