Largo Terreiro de Jesus: The Heart of Salvador's Historic Center

Largo Terreiro de Jesus, also known as Praça 15 de Novembro, serves as the gateway to Pelourinho and the heart of Salvador's Historic Center. This expansive open square is framed by a captivating blend of history, architecture, and cultural diversity. The square's origins trace back to the early days of Salvador, once known as Cidade da Bahia, and served as the Jesuits' starting point for establishing missions to catechize the indigenous communities. The square is paved with a striking black and white Portuguese-style mosaic, creating a geometric wave pattern. At its center stands a grand cast-iron fountain adorned with a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility. Largo Terreiro de Jesus is surrounded by notable churches, including the Catedral Basílica de Salvador, the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Domingos Gusmão, and the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos. Adjacent to the Catedral de Salvador is the former Brazilian School of Medicine, now the Museu Afro-Brasileiro, which showcases Brazil's African heritage through art, clothing, masks, musical instruments, and ceramics. The colorful colonial buildings surrounding the Terreiro de Jesus house artisan shops, bars, and restaurants serving local cuisine. Visitors can witness capoeira performances and browse traditional Bahian handicrafts. The nearby Largo do Cruzeiro de São Francisco features the Igreja e Convento de São Francisco, and the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco.
