Discover more about Forte Santo Antônio

Forte Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, perched on a hill in Salvador, boasts a rich and varied history. Initially built in the 17th century to defend the city against Dutch and Spanish invasions, it never actually saw battle. The fort was expanded from a trench into a full stone and mortar structure between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In 1830, it was transformed into a prison, notably housing Afro-Brazilians captured during the Malê revolt of 1835. It later became the State Penitentiary of Bahia and housed political prisoners during the Brazilian dictatorship starting in 1964 until the prison was deactivated in 1976. After a period of decline, the fort was revitalized by cultural groups and capoeira masters in 1985. Today, Forte Santo Antônio is a cultural hub, hosting capoeira activities and events. Seven capoeira masters teach different styles, creating a harmonious blend of traditions. Visitors can witness the captivating art of capoeira and enjoy the fort's historical ambiance. A small voluntary contribution is required for access. The fort also offers scenic views of the surrounding area.
