Discover more about Plano Inclinado do Pilar

The Plano Inclinado do Pilar, located in Salvador, Bahia, is more than just a mode of transport; it's a historical experience. Connecting Rua do Pilar in the lower city with the Santo Antônio Além do Carmo neighborhood in the upper city, this funicular railway has been a vital link since its construction in 1897. The railway was commissioned by Antônio Araujo Porto and designed by Eng. Júlio Brandão. Originally built on the site of the old Carmelitas crane, the Plano Inclinado do Pilar was electrified between 1912 and 1915 by Otis, who also provided new cars. These cars had adjustable floors to accommodate the line's steep 83% incline. The line was deactivated in 1984 but was fully recovered and modernized in 2006. The total cost of the renovation was two million reais. Modern cars were installed with the capacity for 20 passengers. A ride on the Plano Inclinado do Pilar provides an admirable view of the Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). The rhythmic clattering of the carriages adds to the experience as you ascend or descend the steep incline. At the top, you'll find yourself in the historic Santo Antônio Além do Carmo neighborhood, known for its colonial architecture and vibrant culture. The area boasts numerous shops, galleries, and local eateries where you can savor authentic Bahian cuisine.
