Discover more about Cathedral of Salvador

The Catedral Basílica de Salvador, also known as the Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is the seat of the Archbishop of Salvador and a landmark of sacred art and religious architecture in Brazil. Located in the Terreiro de Jesus in the Pelourinho district, this 17th-century cathedral was initially constructed by the Jesuits as part of a larger monastic and educational complex. The cathedral's construction, which began in 1657 and concluded in 1672, showcases a Mannerist style, reminiscent of the Jesuit Church of Coimbra in Portugal. The façade, made of lioz stone imported from Portugal, is adorned with sculptures of Jesuit saints. Inside, the single-nave design features side chapels, altars, and rich decorations, reflecting a blend of Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical influences. The thirteen altars are covered in over 50,000 gold leaves and 5,000 silver leaves. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several transformations. After the Jesuits were expelled from Brazil in 1759, the church transitioned to the Archbishopric of Bahia. In 1933, it was elevated to the status of basilica after the demolition of the old Cathedral of Salvador. Today, the Catedral Basílica de Salvador is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting history buffs and art lovers with its colonial opulence, 17th-century paintings, and sacred objects. The cathedral is open to visitors, offering a glimpse into Brazil's rich religious and architectural heritage.
