The fountain, acquired in Europe, was originally thought to depict Pedro Álvares Cabral, but historians later identified the sculpture as Christopher Columbus. Over the years, the fountain and sculpture were moved. In 1948, the monument to J.J. Seabra replaced the fountain in its original location, and the Columbus sculpture was relocated to Rio Vermelho. Today, it stands on a different pedestal adorned with sculptures by Mathurin Moreau. The monument has faced challenges, including damage from a car accident in October 2022. The city of Salvador undertook a detailed restoration to preserve the monument's authenticity. Despite its historical significance, the monument is not without controversy. Some historians and professors question the homage to Cristóvão Colombo, citing his neglect of native populations and perspectives.
