Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Jardins, take the Metro Line 2 (Green) towards Vila Madalena and get off at Trianon-Masp. Transfer to Line 1 (Blue) towards Jabaquara. Get off at Sé station. Follow the signs to Praça da Sé. The cathedral will be directly in front of you. The metro fare is approximately R$4.40.

The Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora da Assunção e São Paulo, or simply Catedral da Sé, is the প্রধানতম Catholic church in São Paulo, Brazil. Located in the central Praça da Sé, its history dates back to 1589 when the decision was made to construct a main church in the small village. The current neo-Gothic structure, designed by German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl, had its foundation stone laid in 1913, with construction lasting several decades. The cathedral was consecrated in 1954, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of São Paulo's founding. Measuring 111 meters long, 46 meters wide, and with twin towers reaching 92 meters high, Catedral da Sé is one of the largest neo-Gothic cathedrals in the world. Although primarily Neo-Gothic, it incorporates a Renaissance-style dome inspired by the Florence Cathedral. The interior features exquisite stained glass windows from France and Italy, depicting various religious themes. The crypt houses the remains of notable figures, including former Indian chiefs and Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, the first Archbishop of São Paulo. The cathedral also boasts a massive Italian pipe organ with 12,000 sound pipes. Catedral da Sé serves as a vital spiritual and cultural hub, hosting daily masses and various religious services.
