Discover more about Escadaria do Patapio

Escadaria do Patapio, located in São Paulo's Jardim das Bandeiras district, is more than just a functional stairway; it's a public art installation that reflects the city's vibrant culture. The staircase, originally a simple connection between Medeiros de Albuquerque and Patápio Silva streets, was transformed in 2015 during the Design Weekend event. Dozens of artists and local residents collaborated to adorn the steps with decorative tiles, breathing new life into the space. The beautification project was initiated by Brazilian plastic artist Élcio Torres, with support from a local ceramic store that provided the tiles. The designs range from whimsical figures like butterflies and bees to Portuguese slogans that capture the area's flamboyant character. Over time, the walls surrounding the 94 steps have become a canvas for graffiti artists, adding layers of colorful murals, posters, and tags. The staircase is named after Patápio Silva, a celebrated Brazilian flutist who died young. Today, Escadaria do Patapio offers a mesmerizing sight, drawing visitors with its colorful steps and urban art. It's a popular spot for photography and cultural immersion, providing a quieter alternative to Rio de Janeiro's famous Escadaria Selarón. The location is easily accessible and remains open year-round.
