Discover more about Gorda Peak National Park

Gorda Peak National Park, rising 1,370 feet above sea level, is located on the northwestern ridge of Virgin Gorda. Donated by Laurance Rockefeller in 1974, the park protects one of the last remaining examples of Caribbean dry forest, making it a conservation priority. The park's diverse vegetation ranges from dry scrub forests to moister forests at higher elevations, showcasing species like *Cocoloba microstachya* and *Tetrazygia angustifolia*. It's also home to the endemic Virgin Gorda gecko, one of the world's smallest lizards. Hike the trails to the lookout tower and be rewarded with panoramic views of the BVI, including North Sound and, on clear days, Anegada. The trails offer varying levels of difficulty, with the main trail to the summit taking approximately 20 minutes. While an observation tower once stood at the peak, it was destroyed by Hurricane Irma. Gorda Peak offers a unique experience distinct from the typical tropical beaches, revealing the rugged geological charm of the British Virgin Islands. The cool breezes at the summit provide a refreshing contrast to the warmer coastal climates.
