Ram Head Peak, accessible via the Ram Head Trail, marks the southernmost point on the island of St. John, within the Virgin Islands National Park. This 2.3-mile out-and-back trail presents a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of 229 feet. The average completion time is around an hour, making it accessible for most hikers.
The trail begins at Salt Pond Bay, a 35-minute drive from Cruz Bay. From the parking lot, a short walk leads to Salt Pond Beach, where the trail continues along the shoreline. The path then winds through varied terrain, including rocky sections, beaches like Blue Cobblestone Beach, and groves of cacti, offering diverse scenery.
At the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of St. John's south shore, the Caribbean Sea, and neighboring islands like St. Croix. The peak holds historical significance as a possible hideout for runaway slaves before the 1733 rebellion. In 2024, a plaque was erected to commemorate the 1733 slave rebellion. The trail is known for its lack of shade, so it's recommended to bring water and sun protection.

Driving
From Cruz Bay, the main town on St. John, drive east on either North Shore Road or Centerline Road towards Coral Bay. Turn right onto Route 107 at the Coral Bay sign. Continue for just under four miles to the Salt Pond Bay parking lot on your left. Parking is free, but the lot can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Consider arriving early (before 9 am) to secure a spot. Taxis are also available from Cruz Bay.
Walking
From the Salt Pond Bay parking lot, walk across the dirt path to Salt Pond Beach. Continue to the far end of the beach. Follow the path to the right along the shoreline. The trail then goes into the woods and up a hill. Follow the path until you reach Ram Head.
