Discover more about Fahie Hill Murals

The Fahie Hill Murals, also known as the Ridge Road Murals, are a series of colorful paintings that adorn a retaining wall along the winding Ridge Road in Tortola. This open-air museum showcases 23 connected panels that illustrate community life in the British Virgin Islands during the 1950s, before modern development transformed the landscape. The mural project was initiated in 2001 by Eileene Parsons, then Minister of Culture, with the vision of transforming blank concrete walls into cultural repositories. Local artist Ruben Vanterpool designed and supervised the project, painting nine of the panels himself. He enlisted the help of other talented artists, including Quito Rhymer, Cedric Turnbull, Garth Hewlette, Dean “Ghost” Smith, Pearl Friday, and Thor Downing, to complete the mural. Each panel represents a significant aspect of life in the Virgin Islands, including agriculture, fishing, farming, cooking, baking, schooling, music, transportation, construction, cane cutting, and cattle breeding. The murals depict scenes such as terracing crops, cutting sugarcane, and sharing stories by lantern light. One panel pays homage to Dan Farrington and Bobby Freeman for their contributions in allowing the road to be built on their land. The Fahie Hill Murals serve as an outdoor museum, offering visitors a chance to learn about the culture and history of the Virgin Islands. The site provides panoramic views of Tortola and neighboring islands.
