Discover more about Gorda Peak National Park

Gorda Peak National Park, established in 1974, protects 260 acres of the highest elevations on Virgin Gorda. Rising to 1,370 feet, Gorda Peak offers a cool contrast to the island's beaches and a chance to explore a rare Caribbean dry forest. The park is located on the northwestern ridge of Virgin Gorda, south of North Sound and north of Soldier Bay. Donated by Laurance Rockefeller, the park is a conservation priority, sheltering regionally restricted and endangered plant species. Research has identified species like *Calyptranthes thomasiana* and *Zanthoxylum thomasiana*, both on the US Federal Endangered Species List. Keep an eye out for the Virgin Gorda gecko (*Sphaerodactylus parthenopion*), one of the world's smallest lizards. The trails to the summit offer varying experiences. The longer trail gradually ascends, while the shorter route is steeper. Though the observation tower was destroyed by Hurricane Irma, a nearby boulder provides views of the BVI, especially North Sound. The varying vegetation, from dry scrub to moister forests at higher elevations, adds to the hike's appeal. Picnic sites are available along the trails.
