Discover more about Mount Healthy National Park

Mount Healthy National Park, located on the north shore of Tortola, is a window into the British Virgin Islands' past. The park's centerpiece is the remarkably preserved ruin of an 18th-century windmill, the last of its kind in the BVI. This windmill was once part of a 250-acre sugar plantation, where enslaved Africans cultivated sugarcane on the steep slopes. Visitors can explore the sturdy stone structure of the windmill, imagining the backbreaking labor that took place within its walls. The large arched openings, accented by cut stone blocks, were once used to haul sugarcane in for grinding and to remove the crushed cane. Across the road, you can also see the ruins of the mill round, the factory with the boiling house, the distiller, the hospital, and the living quarters. Following the abolition of slavery in 1834, former workers from the Mount Healthy estate were able to buy land and cultivate it themselves. However, the sugar industry eventually declined due to a series of hurricanes and droughts. Today, Mount Healthy National Park stands as a reminder of this important chapter in Tortola's history.
