Located on Jalan Brooke in Miri, the Miri Handicraft Centre is a treasure trove of Sarawakian culture and artistry. This modern building, which reopened in 2017 after renovations, has been a hub for ethnic crafts since the 1990s. Previously, the site was the Miri Community Hall, hosting local events for 60 years before being converted to the Miri Heritage Center in 2001 and finally the Miri Handicraft Centre in 2018. Inside, you'll find a wide array of handcrafted items made by local artisans from various ethnic groups in Sarawak. These include intricate beadwork, woven baskets, wood carvings, traditional clothing, paintings, and musical instruments. Beadwork is particularly prominent, adorning clothing, baskets, necklaces, and decorations, reflecting its historical significance as currency and status symbols. The center is more than just a shopping destination; it's a place to learn about Sarawak's diverse cultures and traditions. Friendly artisans often share the stories behind their creations, offering insights into the cultural significance of each piece. You might even see artisans crafting their products on the spot.
