Discover more about Burgas salt pans

The Burgas Salt Pans, situated on the expansive Lake Atanasovsko, have been a site of salt production for centuries, dating back to ancient Thracian times. Today, they offer visitors a unique opportunity to witness salt harvesting while indulging in the therapeutic benefits of the mineral-rich mud and lye. The pans' distinctive pink color comes from microorganisms that thrive in the salty environment. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lye pools and cover themselves in the black mud, believed to alleviate skin conditions and joint pain. Freshwater showers are available to wash off the salt and mud. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 300 bird species inhabiting the lake, including flamingos, herons, and Dalmatian pelicans. Lake Atanasovsko is divided into two parts by the Burgas-Varna road, with the northern part designated as a nature reserve and the southern part as a protected area. This makes the salt pans an important site for biodiversity conservation. The area also has a birdwatching hideaway, equipped with viewing windows and information about bird varieties.
