Discover more about The old clock tower of Haskovo

The Old Clock Tower of Haskovo, located in the heart of Haskovo, is more than just a timepiece; it's a symbol of the town's resilience and rebirth. Originally constructed in the early 19th century, the tower represented Haskovo's economic upswing. The tower was made of cut stone, had a tin roof, and a copper bell that counted the hours. A firefighter was stationed at the top to ring the bell in case of a fire. In a surprising turn of events, the City Council decided to demolish it in 1913. However, a century later, in 2013, the tower was lovingly restored, returning one of its most cherished symbols to the town. The restored tower stands at 23 meters, built with hewn stone from Uzundzhovo, mirroring its original construction. Today, the clock tower boasts three dials and an electronic verification mechanism with GPS for accuracy. The bell, a point of pride, was cast by Whitechapel Foundry, the same foundry responsible for Big Ben and the Liberty Bell. The Regional Clock Museum preserves the original clock mechanism and a model of the old tower. The tower is located on the main shopping street, near fountains, parks, and the Monument of Envy. The Old Clock Tower of Haskovo was entirely restored with donations.
