How to get there

Obzor lies on Bulgaria’s E87 coastal road between Varna and Burgas, making road travel the most straightforward way to reach the town. The nearest major airports are Varna Airport to the north and Burgas Airport to the south; both are outside Obzor and onward travel is required. Regional buses and seasonal services connect Obzor with larger coastal settlements, though routes and frequency vary by season. Visitors arriving by rail normally use a station in the wider Varna or Burgas region and continue by road. Check current transport information before travelling, particularly outside the summer season.

Transportation

Obzor itself is compact enough for much local exploration on foot, especially between the central streets, accommodation areas and the beach. History of Obzor

Thracian and Greek Beginnings

The area around present-day Obzor was occupied before the modern resort emerged, with Thracian communities using the coastal plain and routes across the eastern Balkan foothills. In antiquity, a Greek settlement developed here and was known as Heliopolis, a name commonly translated as ‘city of the sun’. The location offered access to the sea, freshwater sources and inland communications, helping it function as more than an isolated beach settlement. Much of the early archaeological record is fragmentary, but the ancient name remains part of Obzor’s cultural identity.

Roman Coastal Settlement

Under Roman rule, the settlement became associated with the name Naulochos and formed part of the wider network connecting Black Sea communities with the interior of the Balkan provinces. Roman occupation left archaeological traces in the town and surrounding area, including remains linked with a temple dedicated to Jupiter. The settlement’s position near coastal and inland routes gave it practical importance, while the fertile landscape supported agriculture. Surviving fragments are modest compared with Bulgaria’s major archaeological sites, but they demonstrate that Obzor predates its modern resort development by many centuries.

The Medieval Fortress of Kozyak

During the medieval period, the area was connected with Kozyak, a fortified settlement located near the present town. The fortress belonged to the defensive and administrative landscape of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, a region contested and influenced by Bulgarian, Byzantine and later Ottoman powers. Its ruins are a reminder that the coast was historically a strategic corridor rather than solely a place of leisure. Archaeological remains are set within a landscape that has changed substantially through later settlement, roads, agriculture and tourism.

From Village to Seaside Resort

For centuries, Obzor remained a small coastal settlement whose economy was linked chiefly to farming, fishing and local trade. Its transformation into a holiday destination accelerated during the twentieth century, particularly as seaside tourism expanded along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast under state-supported development. Hotels, holiday facilities and apartment accommodation gradually spread around the historic settlement and beach. After the political and economic changes of the 1990s, privately operated accommodation, restaurants and seasonal businesses became increasingly important, giving Obzor its present combination of established resort infrastructure and smaller-town character.
