Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian lev, written as BGN or лв. History of Sunny Beach

The Ancient Coast of Mesambria

Sunny Beach stands beside a coastline whose oldest major settlement is ancient Mesambria, the predecessor of modern Nessebar. The town was established by Greek colonists in the early centuries of the first millennium BCE on a fortified peninsula south of the present resort. Its position supported maritime trade across the Black Sea, while the surrounding shore and hinterland supplied agricultural resources. Although the modern resort contains little visible ancient architecture, the archaeological and historic remains of Nessebar provide the clearest connection between today’s holiday coast and its classical past.

Roman and Byzantine Influences

Mesambria became part of the Roman world and later remained an important Black Sea settlement within the Byzantine sphere. Defensive walls, churches and archaeological remains around Nessebar record the peninsula’s continuing strategic and commercial importance during late antiquity and the medieval period. The coastal settlement changed hands between Byzantine and Bulgarian rulers at different times, reflecting the wider political contest over the eastern Balkan coastline. These layers of history survive most clearly in the neighbouring old town rather than in Sunny Beach’s modern hotel landscape.

Medieval Bulgarian Nessebar

During the medieval Bulgarian era, Nessebar developed a distinctive religious and architectural identity. Its surviving brick-and-stone churches, including the Church of Christ Pantocrator and the Church of Saint John Aliturgetos, belong to a wider heritage of medieval Orthodox architecture. The town continued to function as a fortified port and trading centre under later Byzantine and Ottoman rule. Its churches, fortifications and street pattern explain why the old town is recognised by UNESCO, establishing a historical counterpoint to the planned resort that later grew along the neighbouring bay.

The Making of a Modern Resort

Sunny Beach was developed during Bulgaria’s socialist period as a purpose-built seaside resort, with construction beginning in the 1950s.
