Discover more about Samouil's fortress

Perched on Kufalnitsa Hill, near the town of Petrich, Samouil's Fortress is a remarkable testament to Bulgaria's medieval history. Established in the late 10th century during the reign of Tsar Samuil, it served as a strategic military stronghold during the wars against the Byzantine Empire. The fortress was a key part of a defensive system built in the Klyuch area. Visitors are greeted by imposing stone walls that have withstood the test of time, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Exploring the remnants of the fortress, tourists can discover ancient towers and the remains of living quarters that once housed soldiers and their families. Ongoing excavations reveal artifacts dating back centuries, adding to the site's historical significance. The fortress is also linked to a tragic event in Bulgarian history. The site is now a national park-museum, featuring preserved dugouts, a lookout tower, a panoramic platform, and an exhibition hall.
