Discover more about Basic Environmental Observatory - Musala

The Basic Environmental Observatory (BEO) Moussala stands proudly on Musala Peak, the highest summit in the Rila Mountains and the entire Balkan Peninsula, reaching an altitude of 2,925 meters. Located approximately 55 km southeast of Sofia, in the heart of Rila National Park, the observatory serves as a crucial hub for a wide range of scientific investigations. Originally constructed in 1959, the observatory has a rich history of cosmic ray and environmental studies. After being destroyed in 1983, it was reconstructed in 2000 and has since become a modern facility with advanced infrastructure. Its high elevation allows it to operate largely within the free troposphere, minimizing the impact of regional pollution and making it ideal for monitoring long-range transport of pollutants and radionuclides. BEO Moussala's research focuses on complex environmental monitoring, atmospheric physics and chemistry, astrophysics, and the development of sensors and detectors. The facility is equipped with an Automatic Weather Station (AWS), gas and aerosol measurement systems, and devices for cosmic ray research. These tools enable scientists to study the atmosphere, monitor climate change, and investigate the connection between atmospheric events and cosmic ray flux. The two-story building includes laboratories, living quarters, a conference room, and a measuring ground for open-air equipment. Visitors to Musala Peak can observe the observatory from the outside, though access to the interior is restricted to researchers. Reaching the summit involves a scenic journey from Borovets, typically including a cable car ride followed by a hike. The panoramic views from the peak are breathtaking, encompassing major mountain ranges in Bulgaria.
