Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Shumen city center, go to the main bus station on 'Vasil Levski' street. Take bus number 10 to Kyoshkovete. Check the local timetable for current schedules. Get off at the last stop in Kyoshkovete and walk towards the Shumensko Plateau, following signs to Biserna Cave. The cave is within the natural reserve area. A single bus fare is approximately 1.00 BGN.

  • Walking

    From the center of Shumen, near the Shumen Monument, head northeast on 'Tsar Osvoboditel' street. Continue to 'Vasil Levski' street and turn right. Walk to the bus station, about 1 km away. From there, take bus number 10 to Kyoshkovete. Alternatively, from Kyoshkovete, you can walk about 1 km, following signs towards the Shumensko Plateau and Biserna Cave. Note that the walk from Shumen city center to Biserna Cave is considerable, so using a combination of bus and walking is advisable.

  • Driving

    From Shumen, follow the road towards Kyoshkovete. Parking is available on the asphalt road before the turn for the Shumen Municipality villa. From there, continue on foot for about 1 km, following the signs to Biserna Cave. The forest road is not suitable for vehicles. Parking is free.

Biserna Cave, or Zandana, is the longest and most beautiful cave on the Shumen Plateau. Situated within the Shumen Plateau Nature Park, approximately 1 km west of Shumen, it offers a remarkable journey into the heart of nature. The cave features a variety of chambers adorned with intricate rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and stalactones, formed over thousands of years. Some of these formations have been given whimsical names such as "The Castle", "Beehive", "Cactuses", "The Throne", and "Steamboat". The cave is developed on two floors, with an underground river flowing through the lower level. Biserna Cave is also home to 14 species of bats, which are a protected species. To protect the bats, the cave is typically open to visitors only during the spring and autumn. Visits are allowed only after prior registration. The Shumen Plateau itself is rich in history and biodiversity. The area has been inhabited since ancient times and features ancient ruins and archaeological sites. The park offers well-marked trails for hiking and cycling, providing opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna.
