Shumen Clock Tower: A Timeless Landmark

The Clock Tower in Shumen is more than just a time-keeping structure; it's a testament to the city's enduring spirit and rich cultural heritage. Erected in 1740, the tower is one of the oldest clock towers in Bulgaria. It stands near the Tombul Mosque, reflecting the town's diverse history.The tower's architecture showcases a blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles, making it a unique and striking landmark. An inscription on a marble stone at the tower's base praises the clock's maker and includes 24 verses, one for each hour of the day. A fountain is built into the tower's foundation, symbolizing life.Over the years, the Clock Tower has undergone several changes. Originally, it featured two bells that rang every 15 minutes. In 1952, a communist five-pointed star replaced the cross on top, which was then replaced by an amphora-shaped figurine in 1960. Today, the Clock Tower remains a focal point in Shumen, attracting tourists and locals alike.
