Discover more about Sveti Ivan

Sveti Ivan Island, the largest Bulgarian island in the Black Sea, presents a compelling mix of historical intrigue and natural splendor. Situated a kilometer off the coast of Sozopol, the island's story stretches back to the 7th century BC when it served as a sacred place for the Thracians. In Roman times, a temple to Apollo stood here, later replaced by a Christian monastic complex in the 5th-6th centuries. The Monastery of John the Forerunner became an important religious center, but was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout the Middle Ages, serving briefly as a refuge for Cossack pirates in the 17th century. Today, archaeological excavations reveal the remains of churches, a royal residence, and a fortified wall. The island made headlines in 2010 with the discovery of relics believed to belong to St. John the Baptist. Sveti Ivan is also a protected nature reserve, home to over 70 species of birds, including endangered species, and the largest colony of European Herring Gulls in Bulgaria. Mediterranean Monk Seals also inhabit the island's waters. A lighthouse, constructed in 1884, still stands on the island, guiding ships to Burgas Bay. Though a hotel development was planned in the 1970s, it never materialized, preserving the island's wild character. Visits are restricted during the spring nesting season.
