Discover more about Monastery St John the Baptist - ruins Манастир Св Иван Предтеча руини

Located on St. John Baptist Island, just off the coast of Sozopol, the ruins of the Monastery of St. John the Baptist provide a captivating look into Bulgaria's rich spiritual and architectural past. The island itself, the largest in Bulgarian Black Sea territory, was once a sacred place for ancient Thracians. They built a sanctuary here in the 7th century BC, later replaced by a large temple complex dedicated to Apollo the Healer. Christianity arrived later, with the construction of an early Christian basilica in the 5th century AD. This was followed by a larger, more impressive basilica in the 6th century, the ruins of which can still be seen today. A monastery complex grew around the church, becoming a significant religious center, even gaining royal and patriarchal status in the 13th-14th centuries. The monastery was a preferred place of solitude for the Patriarchs of Constantinople; however, in 1629, the monastery was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving monastic complex, including the basilica's enduring walls. In 2010, the relics of St. John the Baptist were discovered near the altar, adding to the site's historical and spiritual significance. The island also serves as a haven for various bird species.
