The Western Fortress Wall of Nessebar stands as a majestic reminder of the town's long and storied past. Dating back to ancient Thracian and Roman times, these fortifications were crucial in protecting Nessebar, then known as Mesambria, from invaders. The section of the wall that remains today stretches for about 100 meters, with walls reaching up to 8 meters in certain areas. Originally, the fortress system included defensive structures dating back to the Thracian era (8th-6th century BC), later enhanced during the Antiquity period (4th-3rd century BC) and the early Byzantine epoch (5th-6th century). The wall itself is constructed from massive stone blocks, a testament to the engineering prowess of the civilizations that built and maintained it. The main gate, known as 'Kale-kapusu' during the Ottoman era, was 4.41 meters wide, expanding to 6.10 meters on the inner side and 1.40 meters in depth. It featured a two-winged door and a descending gate, secured with a beam. Visitors can wander along the remnants of the wall, taking in panoramic views of the sea and the old town, characterized by its cobbled streets and traditional Bulgarian houses. Exploring the Western Fortress Wall offers a serene escape from the bustling tourist crowds and a chance to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Nessebar.
