Curral Velho, located on the south coast of Boa Vista, Cape Verde, is a poignant reminder of the island's history. This abandoned fishing village, the oldest settlement on Boa Vista, dates back to the 17th century. Once a thriving community, Curral Velho was deserted around the 19th century due to relentless drought and pirate attacks, leading its inhabitants to seek refuge in the larger city of Sal Rei. Today, visitors can wander through the dilapidated ruins of the old stone houses, imagining life in this remote outpost. The stark landscape, often described as moon-like, adds to the eerie yet captivating atmosphere. Nearby, you'll find salt flats that were once a vital part of the village's economy, with salt traded to other islands and the mainland. The adjacent beach, Praia de Curral Velho, is a stunning stretch of untouched shoreline, offering tranquility and scenic beauty. The area is also an Important Bird Area, providing a habitat for various species, including the magnificent frigatebird. Curral Velho offers a unique opportunity to connect with Boa Vista's cultural heritage and appreciate the resilience of its people. In 2016, Curral Velho Ramsar Site was located on Boa Vista Island. It is composed of a permanent coastal lagoon at the mouth of the Ribeira de Brito Cruzinha, temporary coastal lagoons, the surrounding dune ecosystems and beach, and the islet of Curral Velho.
