Getting There

  • Walking

    Mission Plaza is centrally located in downtown San Luis Obispo, making it easily accessible on foot from most downtown locations. From Higuera Street, the main thoroughfare, walk west towards the Mission. The plaza is located directly in front of the Mission, between Chorro and Broad Streets.

  • Public Transport

    SLO Transit provides bus service within San Luis Obispo. Several bus routes stop near Mission Plaza. Check SLO Transit schedules for the most up-to-date information. The Old SLO Trolley also serves the downtown area. A single ride on the trolley costs $0.25.

  • Parking

    Several parking garages are located within walking distance of Mission Plaza. Garages are located on Palm Street and Marsh Street. Hourly rates are $2.00, with a maximum daily rate of $8.00. Street parking is also available, enforced Monday - Saturday 9 AM - 9 PM and Sundays 1–9 PM. Street parking costs $2.75 per hour in the downtown core.

The plaza's story began in 1971 when Monterey Street was closed off, transforming the dusty street into a public square. Today, it offers a blend of historical significance and natural charm.The plaza provides access to the Mission's history and the city's past in a beautiful setting. The careful restoration of San Luis Obispo Creek, which runs through the plaza, highlights the area's natural history. A statue of a grizzly bear commemorates the Valley of the Bears, the original name given to the region.Throughout the year, Mission Plaza hosts a variety of events, including the popular Concerts in the Plaza every Friday evening during the summer. These concerts feature live music, dancing, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The plaza also hosts cultural events such as Dia de los Muertos.However, the plaza's history also has a darker side. In 1858, it served as a jail and courthouse for the Committee of Vigilance, who were responsible for the hanging of seven Californios. Today, Mission Plaza is a place where locals and tourists can relax, attend events, and appreciate the blend of history and natural beauty in the heart of San Luis Obispo.
