Manteca, California was founded in 1861 by Joshua Cowell, who is often referred to as the 'Father of Manteca.' The city was originally named 'Cowell Station' after its founder, but it was later renamed Manteca, which means 'lard' in Spanish, due to a labeling mistake by the Southern Pacific Railroad.
