Modesto was founded in 1870 when the Central Pacific Railroad decided to extend its line south of Sacramento. The city was originally planned to be named 'Ralston' after financier William C. Ralston, but he modestly declined, and the name 'Modesto,' which means 'modest' in Spanish, was chosen instead.
