Discover more about Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt

The Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt, affectionately called Frog Park, stands as a testament to community spirit and urban revitalization in Oakland, California. Stretching 3.5 miles, this linear park seamlessly weaves nature and recreation together, providing a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Connecting the vibrant neighborhoods of Rockridge and Temescal, the Greenbelt serves as a vital green corridor for residents and visitors alike. The park's history is rooted in the community's desire to preserve their environment. In the 1960s, Temescal Creek was culverted due to urbanization and flooding concerns. However, a group of dedicated neighbors, later forming the Friends of the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt (FROG), fought to retain a strip of land above the buried creek for public use. In 2001, FROG, along with over 1,300 volunteers, transformed the barren strip into the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt. The Greenbelt follows a portion of the historic Temescal Creek, celebrated through a "reconstituted creek" filled with water pumped from the culvert below. This faux creek meanders through the park, lined with native plants and boulders. The park features redwood groves, oak woodlands, grassy meadows, and butterfly gardens. Benches are placed throughout, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The park also has two custom-built play structures at Hardy Park (Big Frog) and Redondo Park (Little Frog).
